Costa Del Mar South Point Sunglasses

If you’re going to be spending any length of time in the sun while you travel down south for the holidays, you’re going to need a quality pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes.  And, if you’re going to be doing any deep-sea fishing, a common activity on Southern excursions, you might as well use the same sunglasses the pros use.  Consider a pair of South Points by Costa Del Mar ($199-$279) for your travels. A while back I was on a routine shopping trip to pick up some groceries.  As I returned to my car, an elderly lady was getting out of the passenger side of the car parked next to mine.  I patiently waited for her to exit the vehicle and walk past before I headed to open my door.  As she walked by, she turned to her husband and said, “See there still are some gentlemen out there.”  This caught me by surprise as I didn’t think I had done anything special.  In fact, there wasn’t even enough room for me to try to squeeze into my car while she was exiting hers, so even if I hadn’t been brought up and instilled with proper manners, there would have been no logical possibility for me to do anything but wait.  Unfortunately, people aren’t logical and most don’t have manners.  For my action (or inaction) to warrant such a response meant that somebody sometime had not offered her the common courtesy I had.  The comment was like the “Caution: Contents are hot” warning on coffee cups, something that was unnecessary yet was brought about by some ignoramus defying common sense and common courtesy.

Despite the depressing nature of the aforementioned story, chivalry is, in fact, not dead.  It may be on life support but it is still hanging in there fighting with everything it has.  I take pride in my Midwestern upbringing that instilled much of the same values extolled in Southern hospitality.  Yet, there are simply things I was never taught or that I need to brush up on from time to time.  Coming to the rescue of chivalry everywhere is K. Cooper Ray, of the manners and style blog Social Primer, with his brand new book the Bill of Rites for the American Man. (more…)

This week I’ll be soaking up the Caribbean sun on the deck of a cruise ship taking a much needed break from the constant grind at the office.  Therefore, the posts this week will all feature products relating to travel and getting away to warmer climates.  In reality it’s really not too early to start preparing for warmer weather even if you aren’t travelling this winter since many retailers are already starting to populate their shelves with pastel pants and shorts.

Even if you are taking a few days or a week off from reality, that’s no excuse for not keeping up personal hygiene.  A proper dopp kit should always be included in your luggage.  For a dopp kit whose rugged understatement will stand up to the beating of travel, take a look at the Bay Head Bathroom Bag by Blue Claw Co. ($62).  (more…)
