There are several fabrics that are synonymous with summer. I’ve discussed seersucker and gingham previously but have failed to sufficiently discuss another. While I briefly touched on it when discussing the Beaufort Madras Bow Tie by High Cotton Ties, I did not properly go into the finer details of madras. Originating in the hot, humid climate of India, madras is lightweight, making it a perfect fit for the summertime heat. Helping you beat the heat this summer is Cape Madras and their Madras Bermuda Shorts ($90).
Prized in colonial India by the British for its ability to provide comfort in the heat, madras eventually spread to our shores and has kept us cool ever since. Madras is unique in that it the front of the fabric is indistinguishable from the back. Keeping this in mind, you can easily determine if your “madras” really is madras. Madras is almost always plaid and comes in two versions, either the single plaid pattern or a patchwork of different patterns. The bermuda shorts from Cape Madras are the latter variety. Available in 15 different patterns (Trundy is shown), there is a design for everyone. If you’re looking for authenticity, the madras comes straight from a factory in India.
When you wear madras, make sure to wear only one article of the fabric at a time. The last thing you want to do is overdue it in head to toe madras. Simply pair it with a solid color and you’ll be fine.
