I’ve really enjoyed writing this blog for the past month and have loved seeing the amount of people, especially those in the Midwest, check in to see what I have to say. However, I think it may be time for a change. I started this guide to highlight some brands and clothing items that I liked and to serve as a resource for those, especially in the Midwest, who wanted to expand their wardrobes beyond just a few established brands. Unfortunately, most of the brands discussed aren’t based in the Midwest and it has become harder to lend a Midwest perspective and not just become another blog showcasing brands more specifically targeted at those in the East and the South.
Also factoring into this decision is a recent allegation by another blog that this one is “toeing the line” of plagarism (You see what I did there, I put their words in quotes to avoid more allegations of plagarism). Admittedly the two blogs share a similar style, with both bringing daily reviews of clothing, and both blogs have reviewed some of the same products but it is about as close to plagiarism as all of the knock-offs of Stuff White People Like. Just because the other blog reviewed Sperry Top-Siders first apparently means I can’t. I think we can all agree a blog purporting to be a preppy style guide and not including Sperrys (or some of the other duplicate products) loses some of its credibility. This blog was started for fun, there’s no advertising so I’m not making money off of it, and frankly it ticks me off that said other blog has threatened legal action if the “plagiarism” continues. Personally, I take this as kind of a compliment as it must mean that the site is taking off and they view the blog as a viable competitor.
The other factor driving this change is that I have just started my first job out of college and don’t have as much time to focus on the blog. I think also tied into this was being gone on my honeymoon for the past week with limited access to the blog so it’s been a little bit more difficult getting back into the swing of things. Finally, it has become a little boring for me to write about one product each day and I would like to put more of a personal touch on things. This was really brought to light when I wrote the post on the Cordial Churchman Green Seersucker Bow Tie. That post was very personal and meant a lot to me and was definitely my favorite post I’ve done.
Sorry this is getting kind of long but those are the reasons behind the shift in the focus of the blog. What I envision for the future is becoming more of a lifestyle guide that encompasses not just clothing but also puts an emphasis on some of the other things that make our area of America great. There will still be the occasional product review (Bow Tie Fridays are here to stay) but there will also be more posts on destinations, food, events, etc. As opposed to reviewing specific products from companies, I also might review the brand as a whole. Even though we all like the preppy style, each of our personal styles have their own nuances. I might love a shirt from one brand and you might hate it but there’s a good chance you’ll probably like another product they offer. This is your chance to play a part in shaping the future of this blog. Let me know, either in the comments, through an e-mail or @GreatLakesPrep on Twitter or Facebook, what you would like to see on the site. I’ve had a great time interacting with all of you fans and would love to have some of you do a guest post (There’s already one in the works, look for it in the near future). Of course, I might realize in a couple weeks that the new focus has been a bigger flop than New Coke and go back to the old style, but we’ll just have to wait and see. If you made it all the way through all of this, you deserve some sort of congratulations. I’m looking forward to hearing from you all.
